Climate change has been subject to debate around the world for some years now. To minimise the harmful effects caused, in large part by humans, the European Union (EU) has made a great effort to reduce the impact we’re having.

As a means through which to do so, the EU created the Action Plan for the Circular Economy, which aims to develop a carbon-neutral, resource-efficient, more competitive economy. The overarching objective of this plan, is, above all, that products, materials and resources remain in the economy for as long as possible, therefore reducing waste production to a minimum.

Portugal has also put together its own plan, which is similar to the EU’s, aiming to assist in developing innovative technological solutions in various industrial sectors. Doing so will help these sectors transition from a linear to a circular economy, encompassing economic, social and environmental factors.

The mould sector has been implementing management systems geared towards adopting best practices on an environmental level, both by the selective collection and re-routing of waste and reducing energy, involving its workers in creating a culture of sustainability.

The sector is characterised by the solutions implemented to improve its processes, as well as by the way in which the technology used is continuously updated, and the latest technologies adopted to increase efficiency. A result of these practices is the high level of care taken when acquiring equipment, with attention paid to each piece’s energy and production consumption. Thanks to the innovative technologies implemented in the sector, it will now be possible to reduce both the consumption of raw materials and energy necessary for the production of a new mould, therefore getting the most use out of each resource used.

Of course, producers are crucial to achieving the objectives set out in the Action Plan for the Circular Economy, as they play a leading role in product design. The decisions made during this phase have a strong influence on the impact the product will have, on the efficiency of material and energy consumption during manufacturing, on product durability, the possibility of repairing/replacing products, as well as on the options relating to decommissioning and treating end of life products.

Rectimold has ensured its compliance with the legislation and, along with its workers, has been implementing management systems and a set of sustainable measures. As a result, we have been reducing energy, water and raw material consumption and separating and properly routing waste – we’re doing our bit to contribute to a better, greener planet!
